Other Information: *MEGAN CHAO SMITH draws from a rich artistic background of both North
American and Japanese influences. She specializes in traditional
Japanese training on taiko, shinobue and dance. Megan first joined
Odaiko New England in 1996, just after its first anniversary. Inspired
by the 1997 Taiko conference in Los Angeles, she then moved across
country to train with Tiffany Tamaribuchi at Sacramento Taiko Dan. She
assisted Tiffany for 8 years, leading workshops and conferences with
hundreds of taiko groups throughout the mainland United States,
Hawaii, and Canada. In addition to performing and instructing, Megan
took on the roles of educational programming director, concert
producer, and grant writer. During this time, she also took the
opportunity to train in Japan with Hanayui, Amanojaku, Kurumaya
sensei, and Shidara.
It was after completing a 3-month trial period at Shidara's mountain
facility, that Megan was invited to become a formal apprentice. Smith
moved to Japan full time in 2003. In 2006 she became a junior
performing member, and one year later, a full performing member. She
became one of a handful of Americans performing taiko in Japan, and
one of the only non-Japanese to become a long-time (7 year) member of
a professional Japanese taiko company. Megan was also the first
non-Japanese person invited to dance in the Hana Matsuri festival, a
local harvest festival in Shidara's hometown.
As Shidara's management staff, Megan produced numerous events,
showcases and conferences, including three major US tours. She was
instrumental in building Shidara’s long-term US touring circuit, as
well as laying the groundwork for future European tours. She currently
resides in Minneapolis and continues to teach and perform.
