A December Campaign to Build Tomorrow's World

“Remember that consciousness is power. Consciousness is education and knowledge. Consciousness is becoming aware. It is the perfect vehicle for students. Tomorrow's world is yours to build."

— YURI KOCHIYAMA, Asian American civil rights activist

Yuri Kochiyama inspires our season titled, THE WORLD IS OURS TO BUILD. We are channeling her legacy by producing three visionary plays that tell the stories of Asian American characters who are fearless, complicated, and real. We hope these productions encourage you to imagine the world you want to be part of.

Here are our dreams for Mu:

CREATE ROBUST, SUSTAINABLE TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS that develop the next generation of Asian American artists. In October, we trained 12 students through the Mu Training Institute — an acting class taught by Mu veteran Eric Sharp. We want to expand our class offerings so actors, directors, designers, and playwrights all have the opportunity to learn.

“As an up-and-coming actor, it was inspiring and reassuring to be in a space surrounded by Asian actors where stories like mine are represented and told. Eric was an amazing teacher and I would absolutely take another class!”

— Keivin Vang, Mu Training Institute student

GROW OUR PRESENCE ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. As the second largest Asian American theater in the country, we have a responsibility to advocate for the communities we serve and make an impact nationally. We are committed to maintaining our high production values, participate in national conferences, and partner with artists around the country who inspire our work.

"Theater Mu goes beyond making Asian American stories visible; it pushes boundaries, asking us to question all the complexities of our identity as well as empowering us to embrace them."

— Danielle Troiano, actor in Hot Asian Doctor Husband

EFFECTIVELY REACH OUR YOUNGEST AUDIENCE MEMBERS. It is important that our community members of all backgrounds experience representation onstage. Mu spent the past two years learning how best to serve Asian American families. Early next year, Mu is introducing new outreach programming that aims to inspire students to become engaged in their communities.

“Mu occupies a vital presence in the Asian community of the Twin Cities. It is so important for our younger generations to see themselves represented on the stage and to see our stories told with such moving dedication.”

 — Pearl Lam Bergad, Executive Director, Chinese Heritage Foundation

In order to make these dreams a reality, Mu’s board and staff recently created a three-year strategic plan to support these bold, fierce, and beautiful ideas. If you’d like to be part of a family and theater that is committed to artistic excellence and is working to build an inclusive community, donate today to support Theater Mu. WILL YOU DREAM WITH US?

Our goal is to raise $20,000 by December 31. Funds raised will not only cover the day-to-day costs of producing the performances and programs you love, but also get us one step closer to the Mu we imagine. MAKE A DONATION OF ANY AMOUNT TODAY TO HELP US MEET THIS GOAL.
