A December Campaign to Move Towards Something Grander

2020 has been a year like no other.

We have faced intense isolation during this pandemic, grieved in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and been forced to adapt as theater continues to be held at a standstill. Throughout this turbulent year, we found solace in the moments to pause and reflect. We then found purpose in the movements working to bring about revolutionary change.

When given the option to sit back and wait for life to return to “normal,” Theater Mu chose instead to create beauty, battle injustice, and challenge stagnation. We were inspired by the words of Grace Lee Boggs when she said, “Revolution is evolution towards something much grander in terms of what it means to be a human being.” And we chose to center our 2020/21 season around revolutions in every sense of the word:

1. An instance of revolving. In March, we were one of the first theaters in the nation to adapt to the virtual stage. We have produced more than 35 virtual events, employed more than 140 artists, and engaged with over 150,000 audience members from around the world.

2. A fundamental change in the way of thinking about or visualizing something. We have completely reimagined our upcoming productions. Audiences will be able to watch a full mainstage show designed specifically for the virtual environment. As trailblazers, we will continue to improve and innovate how theater can be made and experienced.

3. A movement designed to effect changes in a social order, in favor of a new system. This year has brought about much-needed societal reconfigurations, and we continue our commitment to contribute with both words and actions as leaders in the theater and Asian American community. We spoke out against COVID-related racism, collaborated with BIPOC artists to create anti-racist theater and corporate trainings, and invested wholeheartedly in our relationship with the Twin Cities Theaters of Color Coalition.

While theaters of all sizes have been forced to close their doors and wait out the storm, we have produced more events and reached more audiences than in any other season since our inception in 1992. We could not have done it without you. We thank you for standing by us and ask for your support to continue this momentum into the second half of our season.

Will you donate today to help reach our goal of raising $20,000 by December 31?

These funds will go directly towards paying artists, many of whom continue to endure financial struggles during this pandemic. Your support will also pay for the technology and infrastructure needed to create our bold virtual productions. Finally, your donation will proudly proclaim your aid to the fight for equity and justice. We believe acts of all sizes are revolutionary. Donate today, in any amount, and help us move towards something grander.

With care and gratitude,

LILY TUNG CRYSTAL
