HOME / AUGUST FUNDRAISER 2022
A NEW MILESTONE
Join us as we celebrate 30 years of Asian American theater and build the foundations for the next 30.
As anti-Asian hate crimes increased by 339% across the United States, Theater Mu’s 2021/22 season proclaimed that the time to SEE OURSELVES is right now. But in reality, this fight for visibility began back in 1992 with the very founding of Mu. Now, 30 years later, we proudly stand as the Midwest’s premier Asian American theater company as well as a Cultural Treasure of Minnesota. Our collective voices and stories have gained power, the need for representation has grown deeper and more vital, and our journey toward a more equitable future continues.
This past season opened with three innovative virtual offerings and welcomed back audiences to in-person theater with two triumphant productions, Anna Ouyang Moench’s Man of God and Lauren Yee’s Cambodian Rock Band, plus our largest New Eyes Festival to date.
Beyond the stage, our Mu Training Institute for aspiring and established BIPOC artists and our Mu Explorations Summer Camp for Asian American youth continued. Theater Mu also held multiple outreach events with schools, colleges, Asian affinity groups, and community organizations. Our goal is to inspire and create connections through the power of art for this generation of Asian American leaders and beyond. We are on the precipice of the next three decades of Theater Mu, and our expanse and impact is only growing.
Our mission began 30 years ago, but the need for high quality Asian American art is as necessary as ever. We are done being “othered.” We belong. We are done being the “model minority.” We are complex and immense. We are done being seen as the “perpetual foreigner.” We are culture bearers and cultural creators.
The time for truly SEEING OURSELVES has always been NOW. Stand up. Speak out. Claim space. Embrace your voice. Join us in the journey today.
Will you help us reach our goal of $30,000 by Aug 31 by donating today?
