MU’S DEBUT PRODUCTION

Theater Mu made its premiere in the Twin Cities with a trio of excerpts from FOB by David Henry Hwang, Triangles by Ed Bok Lee, and Mask Dance: Journey Within by Juwon Noh and Dong-il Lee.

FOB focuses on cousins Grace—an FOB, or fresh off the boat—and Dale—an ABC, or American born Chinese—who are college students. Dale wishes to fit into white American culture whereas Grace does not feel the same way. When they meet Steve, an exchange student from Hong Kong, his arrival in their lives causes Grace and Dale to confront their identities and differing feelings.

Triangles focuses on three characters of Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese descent physically articulate the untold effects of war through poetry, personal narrative and tradition Korean drumming. Triangles was later co-produced by Walker Art Center and the Southern Theater for the “Out There Series” from January 8-10, 1993.

Mask Dance: Journey Within at the time of New Voices was a one act play, yet to be developed fully. Preformed with traditional Korean drumming and based on personal stories and interviews with several Korean adoptees.
