SEEKING
Seeking actors for Katie Ka Vang’s Hmong Futures. AEA minimum is $623 per week. Non-AEA actors will be paid $15/hour or an equivalent sum. All roles are local contracts.
All Equity actors will be seen even if in-person slots are full. If all time slots are full, Equity actors may contact info@theatermu.org. If you cannot make an in-person audition appointment, we have a video audition option available.
SYNOPSIS
The Hmong Futures theater project commemorates 50 years of Hmong communities in the Twin Cities and dreams about what it looks like for these communities to thrive in the next 50. Playwright Katie Ka Vang created this with the Hmong community, including interviews, story circles, workshop readings, family-style dinners, and facilitated conversations.
REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE DATES
First Rehearsal: Mar 11, 2026
Tech Rehearsals: April 1-10, 2026
Previews: April 9 & 10, 2026
Opening Night: April 11, 2026
Closing Performance: May 3, 2026
Rehearsals will take place at the Mu Studio (755 Prior Ave. N #107, Saint Paul), with tech rehearsals and performances at Gremlin Theatre (550 Vandalia St. #177, Saint Paul).
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Zong - 60s, refugee-immigrant, female, was in survival mode for too damn long but no longer, might be the only one who’s not in survival mode. Mother of Fhoua. Update, Jan 6: This role is available for audition.
Fhoua - early 40s, refugee-immigrant female, GenX, burned out, been surviving for so damn long she can’t even tell anymore, but she’s gonna learn. Daughter of Zong, mother to Maly.
Maly - 17, nongender specific, second gen, Gen Z, nonviolent communications specialist, magical.
Aben - 19, male presenting, second gen, an econ major at a local college, surviving. Son of Zong’s late husband from another woman.
Unclefriend - 60s, male presenting, refugee-immigrant, Zong’s neighbor, and “Unclefriend”. Zong’s next-door neighbor and would-be boyfriend if they actually admit to it.

Sign up for in-person auditions at our SignUpGenius. In-person auditions are Jan 26 from 10 am-2 pm CT and 6-10 pm CT at the Mu Studio (755 Prior Ave. N #107, Saint Paul).
Acting sides are available in this folder. Please prep for all interested roles, but come ready to identify and audition for your first choice. Callbacks are invite only and will take place Jan 27 from 4-9 pm CT at the Mu Studio.
